Excited to see what you came up with!

I ordered up two of the new expansion. Pretty excited to see it arrive.

I've dabbled with custom characters from the stat side of things, but haven't had a chance to create much for customs yet. I have plenty of models, just need to find the time to work on them. :P

I don't know if there is an official ruling on it or not, but my gaming group has always treated it as one or two tiles.

I think a lot of the size argument stems from the bases themselves. If you sit something under the 2nd edition figures from the starter to make the base sit level with the traditional bases then they aren't too bad height wise. I think the only real complaint I have related to size is that the gun itself for the smartgunner is smaller than the original.

About two thirds of the way down the page you can see some good side by side pictures with the newer models propped up so the bases are level. Not a perfect match, but not really bad eiher:

I've been doing models for about ten years now, starting with Warhammer and Battletech. Since then, I've done a hand full of other games as well with AVP being the most recent I've started to collect.

With that for context, I'll also add that I'm a mediocre painter of models at best, but have moderately large collections of most everything I play.

For glues, I've tried a wide range of glues, some expensive, some cheap, and when the day is done, there really isn't a huge difference between everything I have used. My personal favorite is to just buy the cheap gel superglue. Its got good strength to it, it stays where you put it for the most part, and the thickness of the gel can hold smaller pieces in place before they've dried if you're careful with it.

For spray paints, it DOES seem that the brand name stuff is a little better than the cheap stuff, but I still make use of the cheap spray paint. I just have to be a little more careful with it to avoid using too much. Just a really light layer, barely a dusting seems to work best for me. Sometimes it takes two coats to cover everything correctly though if you're concerned about the paint filling detail. On the grounds that I tend to be very gentle with my models, I couldn't tell you how easy it is to scratch paints off of your models though, so for the spray paints you might want to ask someone who plays competitively and transports their models regularly as they are the kinds of players who are most likely to know what's going to work best on that front.

So, a little followup for this for anyone who is interested:

I haven't actually started statting anything out yet, but I have found a few substitutes I'm hoping to convert for different units.

I've actually been looking at several possibilities for custom figures for the game. Some of what I have come across since the last time I posted:

For the Predator Hunting Bike:

I was thinking I'd start with a head swap. From there, I was thinking of placing a running board and handle that would allow additional passengers to hold on (The book says it can carry two passengers.) then maybe make some kind of addition to the front of the vehicle to make it look more appropriate to the predators. On the grounds that the books and comics imply a wide range of build styles for their vehicles, I figure if there's ever an official model made for this game, I'll still be able to make use of these.

For a Berserker Unit/Exosuit:

I think its going to be a little on the small side, but it looks closer than most anything else I could find online and is by far the most cost efficient way to add them to my army. I'm kind of torn on whether or not they should fit on a 40mm or 50mm base, but on the grounds that the Power Loader is listed as a "Medium" base and the Exosuit is listed as a "Large" base in the Unleashed book, I think the larger base size is probably correct in this case. Also, I'm still considering if I should do some kind of head swap. From the pictures I've seen online, they look similar sized to the Predators over the Human models, so at least they look to be on a similar scale to the power loader.

Spitters:

Surfing on the internet, I saw something that came as a surprise. Someone had taken a Alien Warrior model and painted it. (Picture above is the one I found, I have not yet tried to make my own this way.) The head ridges all got painted in shades of green, with the rest of the model being painted the normal black. It looks nice enough that I'll be trying something similar in an effort to put together a couple of small units of spitters. Best part is that if an official model is ever released I can keep the models that way to use as a unique Warrior unit later.

In addition to that, there are a couple of miniature makers online who have alternate Predator models. They're in 28mm, which looks kind of small against the others, but they do offer some nice alternates to the existing models if you want to add some variety to your army/have alternate models for use as rarer units that don't already have their own models. HorrorClix has several Predators which fit the 32mm size. The Predastore (No Predator models currently on their site, but you can still find a few of their limited edition models online) has an incredible range of models, but unfortunately they are 28mm which makes them look pretty small beside the Prodos versions. (There are other model ranges too, but they are all either much larger, or the quality is kind of meh.)

The "Capitol" range of miniatures for WarZone has a lot of models that look like they could act as Mercenaries, or a couple of them might even work as Marine Heavy Support models.

I think the model I am most anxious to find a proxy for is Hurk Mondo (From the comis: Alien: Colonial Marines, Mondo Pest, Mondo Heat.) which I intend to put together some unique stats for, and also to use as a Heavy Support model. Been looking around ebay, but still haven't found anything close yet.

Anyone else come up with ideas for either substitute models for things that don't already have an official model, or customs?

Very true. Maybe once I've filled out the rest of my army, I'll go looking for them if they haven't been released to the general customer.

I'll keep looking, every once in a while, you find an incredible deal on ebay. I'll keep watching for cheap copies in the meantime. Until then, I'll keep using my old rebased Horrorclix Predators to fill in the gaps in my army,

One of these days, I'll have to shoot a few pictures of my armies to show them off. Just have to finish building everything first.

Glad I could be of service. I know I've been eyeing the Dutch and Linn models for a while (Loved the old AvP Arcade game, God only knows how many quarters I shoved in that machine as a kid.) but cant quite convince myself to pay that much for them.

GateKeeper's picture

I think a lot of these models were exclusive to the kickstarter. If you really want to see them, you can occasionally find some of them on ebay.

Hopefully they will release those items to the rest of us, or some variant of them, at some point in the future.
